We Shouldn't Invest Time and Money in Driverless Cars: Here's Why

By Apoorva Khandelwal

We should not invest time and money transitioning to driverless cars. A driverless car doesn’t need a driver and gasoline to function. Imagine being in a self-driving car. You relax in your car. All of a sudden, you realize that you blacked out from a crash. Who’s fault is it? Is it yours, the car’s, or the creator’s? To replace all the sensors and software, it would already be over $100,000. Why invest in a self driving car, you think? Over the years, people have been trying to make self driving cars. If you don’t like wasting time and money don’t invest in a driverless car.

First of all, driverless cars are going to be expensive. The software of driverless cars adds up. This is important because having features that are highly expensive won’t be affordable. If adopted widely, hackers would be interested. Even though sensors are small, they are expensive. An article states that driverless cars are going to be slower, expensive, and harder to make. It makes sense for a car to be expensive that is fast, but this car is slower than normal ones for a larger cost, which isn’t a fair deal. It might be true that it would be cheaper to take a self driving car because it wouldn’t use gasoline. Still all in all, wouldn’t you want to have an average car at a cheaper price?

Next, if autonomous cars are adopted widely, transportation-related jobs will be taken away. When it comes to jobs such as taxi drivers, jobs will be eliminated. The part of this which seems relevant is the economy and unemployment rate will have a negative impact.

Creative yet dangerous, self driving cars aren’t currently safe. Last year, a woman was killed by a self driving Uber. More tests will be run and more injuries will occur. It will be difficult to make a car that can see it’s surroundings, so nobody gets hurt. According to “Top 20,” weather can cause damage to driverless cars, proving that accidents will occur. According to Ashley Nunez, when a car is in charge of our security and safety, it's dangerous. Computers have errors and need to be fixed. Others might say, computers would prevent the danger of a car crash. But would you rather stay alive and drive yourself or would you rather be unsafe with a self driving car?

Investing money and time on driverless cars shouldn’t happen. Many people won’t be able to afford this technology. Certain jobs will be taken away, causing a negative impact on our economy and unemployment rate. We also wouldn’t want a car malfunctioning in the middle of the road. Consider this when you realize that our safety and security are in the hands of a computer. I wouldn’t want to trust a computer, thinking it wants my personal information. As time and technology keeps evolving, we should make sure we don’t invest in driverless cars.
