There has been a remarkable increase in the use of online social media (OSM) service in India, including Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn etc. In addition to these usages of one to one messaging service has also taken drastically increasement like WhatsApp have more than 200 million users that is highest in the world. India has 462 million users accessing the internet, these
are divided in Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram etc. and majority of users access their internet through their mobile phones. These services have had very profound impact in India overall digital literacy has increased very much, people are more connected, it also helps in exchanging information and local
language has also increased. The deep penetration of social media services also has negative effects like spreading of small information, phishing, increase in number of spammers and many more.
Positive effects of social media
1) Social media has made it easy to make friends: - It is easier to make
large number of friends in very short time. Earlier it was not easy to
connect with many people. However, the usage of smartphones helped
number of people to connect in different and unique way. After social
network started the concept of friendship has also started to change. Right
now, it is possible to make hundreds to thousands of friends over any
social networking platform. It is true that they might not be those friends
with whom you are going to spend time but nonetheless, they are
definitely going to be your friends at least in the digital world.
2) Social media helps in speedy communication: - It is obvious that your
time free time resources are getting degraded daily, especially when
managing both your work and family commitments. However, each and
every social networking site offers a chance of communicating with one
another in an efficient and speedy manner.
3) Social media helps in building a relationship: - Social media helps you
to get back in touch with those people, with whom you have lost contact
years back. You can also build a relationship with a person whom you
have a numerous common thing. It can also be said that social media is
one of the best grounds for starting long lasting relationships. Whether it
is friendship or love, social media will help you to get succeed in it.
4) Social media helps in fostering empathy: - Almost every person
discusses different subjects on social networking sites, and this is an
absolutely natural process. You are basically sharing your ups and downs
with people you think they care about you. The important point here is
when you share your good as well as your bad experience on different
social networking sites you may find persons who empathize with you.
You might even meet a friend, who has already faced the same problem
that you are facing and help you to solve it. This experience is going to
very helpful with you.
Negative effects of social media
1) Spreading untrue information: - The cry of fake news has become a
common place and consumer evidences in even traditional media outlets
has been significantly eroded. False, misleading, or confusing online
content can upset your loyal customers, harm your brand reputation,
dissuade people from purchasing your product or services.
2) Mental health: - The study shows that mental health professionals said
that the impact of social media on our mental health. Some believe that
constant distraction of social media reduces our attention span. It also
been reported that people who uses Facebook or Twitter regularly had
high level of stress. Employee mental health can have a direct impact on
our business. When employees are happy, relaxed and confident, they can
work more productively and efficiently and can also maintain a good
relation with his co-workers. On the other hand, if employees are in stress
then they will be less active.
3) Online bullying and workplace tensions: - Many people think of
cyberbullying as being a problem for young people. Unfortunately,
adults may also bully each other online, and sometimes their targets are
co-workers. Typical types of bullying include aggressive and unpleasant
emails, private messages and public comments, putting unflattering or
manipulated photos of the bullying target online. Employees who are
victims of bullying often report experiencing extreme stress. which may
eventually affect their performance.
Colleagues may also experience tensions if they follow each other on
social platforms. While many workers are careful to avoid expressing
opinions on controversial subjects at work, they may be less restrained
online.
4) Time management: - Most of the employee of business have their social
media accounts. Many of our employee have the habit of checking their
accounts multiple time in a day, even when they are at work. When an
employee spends just a few seconds on social media, it can take several
minutes to refocus to the work which has been given to him. It also
reduces developing quality work relationships.
