Digital Media: The Lesser Known Realities

Updated: Jun 8, 2021

We use social media everyday in our lives, but I am going to explain the networking platforms and uses of these social media. 45% of the world population uses these networks. In the past year, over 366 million new people have started consuming the digital world.

One of the biggest platforms of networking is Facebook, with nearly 2.38 billion users monthly active. Many people use Facebook because it was one of the first platforms as it was created in 2004 allowing several people to join. However, teenagers nowadays use Instagram (owned by Facebook) and Snapchat. For individual users, it allows you to connect with friends and colleagues. For marketing, Facebook is great. Many businesses create pages on FaceBook advertising products and deals. This is great because it reaches out to a large group of people.

Another media is Twitter. Twitter has over 126 million active users daily. It is a ‘microblogging’ system that allows you to send short messages called tweets. You can either make your own tweet or retweet information so it gets out to a wider group. This app is mostly used by phone users as they prefer to read shorter content in-screen. Twitter allows you to reach new audiences, promote your work and get feedback, and express yourself. You can tweet about anything you like! The reason for this is because it has mostly informal communications so don't be scared to express yourself.

The last networking app I am going to talk about is LinkedIn. LinkedIn has over 500 million users in general. It is a very large networking tool that can help you get the right job/internship and connect and strengthen professional connections. This app is mostly used for sharing experiences and resumes as well. This is a very professional site so make sure to tailor your work depending on what media you are using. One reason you should use LinkedIn is because it helps build your brand. You can find lots of great opportunities on it. I personally have LinkedIn and what it has helped me is with connections. When I connect with people, I make sure it has to do something in my interest range so I can ask them questions as they are an expert on it.

What all these social media have in common is that through simple actions of tagging, commenting, and reacting to posts you can easily communicate with others.
