By Ankit Dhandhania

Scrolling and checking through social media has become a popular activity over the last decade. Use of social media is non problematic, there is a small percentage of users that has become addicted to

social networking sites and engage in extreme or compulsive use. In fact, it has been researched that 5 to 10 percent of American citizens fall under criteria of social media addiction. Addictive social media use will look like of that any other substances use disorder, including mood modification, salience, tolerance, withdrawal symptoms, conflict and relapse. The phenomena of social media addiction can largely be contributed to the dopamine including social environments that social networking sites provide.

Social media like Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat produce the same neutral circuitry that is caused by gambling and recreational drugs to keep consumer using their product as much as possible. In

fact, neuroscientists have compared social media interaction to a syringe of dopamine being injected straight into the body. When a person uses a social media, they see other people’s life too.

If they see other people with having better appearance than him or her, they will start comparing themselves to them. These people sometimes will get jealous of the people who are famous than them, and they can feel ashamed of themselves sometimes. They will develop the feeling of being under pressured, stressed and depressed. These mental problems are very dangerous to people because it can cause to lose their mind.

Negative Effects of Social Media

1) FOMO (fear of missing out): - It is just what it is sound like, a form of anxiety that you get when you are scared of missing out on a positive experience that someone else is having For example, you might constantly check your messages to see if anyone has invited you out, or focus on your Instagram feed all day to make sure that nobody is doing something cool and fun

without you.

2) Unrealistic expectations: - As most people probably know by now, social media forms unrealistic expectations of life and friendships in our minds. Most social media sites have a severe

lack of online authenticity. People use Snapchat to share their exciting adventures, post about how much they love their significant other on Facebook, Instagram, and load up their

Instagram page with heavily staged photos. But in reality, you have no way of knowing whether this is all a farce. While it looks great on the surface, that person could be in massive debt, on bad terms with their significant other, and just desperate for Instagram likes as a form of validation.

3) Students develop poor study habits: - Affects the student school grades because they rarely prepare for their examination and do their homework. They got distracted and lose their focus because they keep checking their social media in class.

4) Straying away from reality: - They don’t make time for others activities. Teenagers and peoples rather stay at home and update their social media instead of going out.

Managing Your Social Network Addiction

1) Go outside: - Get away from the portal to the network. Get some sunshine, chances are you needed it. It will also help your mind to get freshen up and work more efficiently. It will also increase

your concentration towards work.

2) Spend more time with your close friends and family: - You are not only one who suffers when you spend more hours in Myspace. Your family and friends don’t see you. Because you are too busy in clicking your profile picture from different angles. Cut out the cancer and get back to your close friends and family.

3) Track your time online: - The easiest way to ensure that you are not wasting your time in any one place is to monitor your time. Use a stopwatch, timer or set a limit. When time is out, log put,

regardless of what is left. There is always tomorrow.

4) Turn off “push” notifications on social media: - we are constantly drawn to our phones with every buzz sound, buzz your flash from the notifications light. Potter says one of the easiest ways is to turn off these push notifications and mute all apps. In conclusion, social media also have positive benefits in our life, but addiction to it is dangerous. It will have negative effects if we use more of social media in our studies and work. It will also have bad influence on out health.
