• relationship
/rɪˈleɪʃ(ə)nʃɪp/
noun
the way in which two or more people or things are connected, or the state of being
connected.
• technology
/tɛkˈnɒlədʒi/
noun
the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes, especially in industry.
A feeling coming from the heart and practical purposes don't exactly seem to go hand in
hand, do they? However, sometimes opposite spheres intersect... And this is one of those
times.
Technology has affected relationships since its conception, in varied ways. Positively and
negatively. For better and worse. Whichever way one looks at it, what cannot be denied is
that technology has had a huge impact on relationships.
Technology has the potential to destroy relationships, many have dramatically proclaimed
that their partners (appear to) "love their phones" more than they love them... However, that
very same technology supports long distance relationships, allowing friends, relatives and
others to stay connected!
At this juncture, one may quote Gilbert Parker and say, "Love hath no distance, it hath no
continent" and thus technology plays no role in these relationships. However, the fact still
remains that since the birth of technology 58% of long distance relationships work out, as
technology helps people stay connected!
“Gen-Xers may look at young people staring at their devices and think they’re being
antisocial, but who is to say we’re right and they’re wrong? They’re just socializing
differently,” says Robert Weiss, a counselor in Los Angeles.
It may seem like technology is the reason a mother worries that her child has no time for her
anymore, but it is also technology that helps communities grow online and build a strong
interconnected "world wide web" of love.
Technology often leads to the disastrous dates(that occur so often in books and movies)
where someone feels forced to leave through the fire escape! However, technology also
brings together people from across the globe in some of the closest relationships,
relationships defying distance!
A deal breaker or deal maker? A relationship broken or one made stronger? Whichever it
may be, what is important is to embrace technology. Embrace relationships. Embrace
technology and relationships, together or apart.
