Such is the much repeated loop in which people live their lives nowadays. Social media has become front, back and centre! When something like this exists, which can influence your life, which can have such a huge impact on you, having the correct approach to it is absolutely necessary. Thus, social media literacy is necessary.
"Media literacy teaches you how to discern the credibility of information. Is this photo telling you the truth? Did this person really mean what the article said or were the person’s words taken out of proportion?" These words by blogger Lis Fortun sum up the essence of social media literacy and its aim very clearly.
Social media literacy not only ensures that you are aware of what is true and what is not, but also helps you grow as a person and a mind.
It not only encourages you to know about other points of view but also teaches you to accept them. It gradually broadens your outlook, broadens your vision. It introduces you to credible information and increases your general awareness. Hello, personal development!
As it was wisely said on Pressbooks, "Today, we are living in what is known as the Digital Age and the only constant is that it will continue to develop and expand for future generations. It is important for everyone to develop and expand along with the media, in order to properly understand what is being circulated. For this to happen, we need to develop media literacy skills."
Media literacy ensures that you grow. It ensures that you grow as a person. It ensures that you grow as a mind. It ensures that humans grow as a unit. It ensures that the world grows.
With social media literacy, we can say goodbye to ignorance and false information. We can welcome a new day as active thinking beings, aware of the world around us. With social media literacy we can move toward an enlightened tomorrow…
