When you think of technology, What do you think of? Some people may think of the first computer while others might think of more ancient forms of technology whereas others might think of prehistoric technological advancements like the wheel and fire. Although many people have their own, unique opinions of what technology is, Merriam Webster Dictionary defines technology as “a manner of accomplishing a task especially using technical processes, methods, or knowledge”.
In this sense, we can view every mechanical advancements that the human species has made as a technology. We will discuss some advancements that the human species have made and consider their contribution to society and how they shaped the world that we know.
Electronically messaging has been vital for humans to communicate to their friends and loved ones. Without these 2 gentlemen and their amazing invention, messaging someone in the late 18th century to the early 20th century and even to today, could’ve been delayed 40 or 50 years. In 1837, British inventors, Willam cook and Charrles Wheatstone obtained a patent for a telegraph system that used 6 wires that moved 5 needle pointers attached to 5 galvanoscopes at the needle pointers attached to five galvanoscopes at the receiving end. The desired result would make it type words via currents being sent through the proper wires so that the needle could direct the buttons. During the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln used the telegraph to communicate with his general and in the campaign of 1860, Abraham learned that the telegraph helped him win the Republic nomination and the presidency.
Another way that technology helped us was by less labor and more ease, one of those technological innovation was the cotton gen by Eli Whitney. In 1794, 29 year old Eli patented his invention of the cotton gin, though the cotton gin did speed up the removal of cotton seeds from fiber, it helped lead southern farmers’ justification to grow and maintain their slave laborers.
In conclusion, technology has been innovated and changed throughout the centuries. Sometimes, technologies has been made for the intent of good nature, like the telegram, but sometimes people can use them for for wrong justifications, like the cotton gin.
