How Technology is helping Disney create a Monopoly in the Entertainment Industry

By Nicholas Perry

Among the years, many different business endeavors both succeeded and failed. Today, Im here to talk about a giant amongst the entertainment industries. This beloved, children-themed big cooperation took nearly 100 years to cultivate. As well as the struggles that Walt Disney went through, I’ll also be sharing how technological advancement made Disney what it is today.

In 1923, a young Walt disney, after his Laugh-O-Gram Studio become bankrupt, moved to Los Angeles. There, his brother Roy was recovering from tuberculosis, then on October 16 Walt and Roy founded the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio. The brothers then went on to produce the beloved, singing mouse we all all know so well. When the Mickey Mouse sketches become super popular, it convinced Walt to do a feature film, termed “Disney’s folly” by some.

In 1928, a collaboration between Walt Disney Studios and Celebrity production released Steamboat Willie, thanks to the invention of the movie camera in the late 1800’s. It was a revolutionary idea in 1928 to have sound in movies; only a few movies did, including Steamboat Willie. The Invention of the Pat Powers’ Cinephone system allowed the producers and designers of Steamboat Willie to incorporate the sound into the movie.

A few years later, in 1938, Disney achieved their very first color feature film named Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. There had been color in movies before like 1903’s The Great Train Robbery or 1915’s The Birth of a Nation, Disney didn’t use these coloring method because the were either: labor intensive, like the “Hand-coloring technique”, or expensive, like the 1916’s invention of the “technicolor technology”. Or both. Even though technicolor was super expensive and required a lot of work, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs used the ‘technicolored” technique.

When the internet was invented as we know it today, by 1991, allowed Disney to reach a more global audience.  On March, 21, 1990, Disney Enterprises, Inc purchased the Domain Disney.com,allowing them to reach more people than they ever could. Infact, Disney.com statistics on alexa.com read that search traffic on  disney.com search traffic was 47.3% while other companies 24.4% and their bounce rate had a narrower gap between Disney and their competitors with Disney having a rate of 58.3% and their competitors having a rate of 51.3%. The Global Internet Engagement is high up there as well with Disney having a rank of 3,902.

On November 12, 2019, Disney unleashed their streaming service, Disney plus, to the public. Disney plus is the result of years of hardwork and acquiring of other companies, including some popular title such as Disney(of course), Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and National Geographic.

Technology has made some huge advancements for many companies, whether it’s a big, corporate, business like Disney, or a start-up company that is just starting to earn some capital. It has brought so much value in not only the movie and entertainment industry, but also in art, science, music, math and much more! Weather you are a individual that thought that there will be a robot invasion in the future, like I thought 2-3 years ago, or if you use technology to help you with whatever you do, many people find uses for technology in their specific field of studies.
