Evolution of the Apple iPhone (2007-2017)

By Karen Lin

Apple’s iPhone began in 2007. As of 2020, Apple hit its 13th year anniversary of its first ever release of the original iPhone.

Former CEO of Apple, Steve Jobs, released Apple’s first iPhone on June 29, 2007. With a 3.5 inch screen and a 2-megapixel camera, it gained praise for its new multitouch features. The phone included features such as multi-touch touchscreen display, proximity sensor, ambient light sensor, microphone, and headphone controls.

Released on July 10, 2008, the iPhone 3G became the first iPhone with a GPS and 3G connectivity. This iPhone was significantly cheaper and offered more storage. Location services were also built into the phone, which Steve Jobs stated, “location services is going to be a really big deal on the iPhone.”

The iPhone 3Gs was released on June 19, 2009, with an upgrade of “s” in 3Gs standing for “speed.” Features such as copy and paste, push notifications, landscape keyboard, and more were also included in 2009. Some of the improvements included speed improvements and faster 3G connectivity. It was also the first iPhone to have the ability to record videos with a 3-megapixel camera with the resolution of 480p.

The new redesigned iPhone 4 was released on June 24, 2010. The iPhone 4 was the first iPhone to have a Retina display along with the highest screen resolution of 640 x 960 pixels. A few of the most important features includes being the first iPhone to have a front-facing camera and a 5-megapixel camera that has the ability to record videos in HD with 720p.

When the iPhone 4s was released on September 2011, one of its biggest feature was Siri, which was able to set alarms and calendar appointments. The other major features included a more powerful, dual-core chip, the Apple A5, a new 8-megapixel camera, and iCloud storage.

Compared to previous phones, the iPhone 5 was introduced with a slightly bigger display. It was also the first iPhone that had its chip made by Apple itself, departing from Qualcomm. The design of the iPhone 5 was also thinner and lighter.

On September 10, 2013, not one, but two new iPhone models were introduced: the iPhone 5s and the iPhone 5c. The “s” in iPhone 5s represented two new key features, which were a new Apple A7 Cyclone chip which was the first 64-bit chip on a phone, and then the Touch ID feature that allows fingerprints to unlock phones. The iPhone 5c is a redesign of the iPhone 5 using a plastic shell that came with various colors.

In 2015, the iPhone 6 and 6s Plus were introduced with bigger screen sizes: the 4.7-inch and the 5.5-inch respectively. The phones were designed as a thin model with an aluminum body. They also came with a better camera with faster auto-focusing, and the new A8 chip that worked faster and more efficiently. Other features include Live Photos that records short videos before and after a still image, new 3D touch motion wallpapers, as well as the support for “Hey, Siri.”

The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus were the first models to not have the headphone jack that the previous phones had. The most significant feature of these were the dual cameras with telephoto lens that allowed zoom-in photos and having the portrait mode.

Apple released three new iPhone models in 2017: the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and the iPhone X. The iPhone X was the first one with an OLED display and the new Face ID recognition. Just like the iPhone 8 models, the glass back design allowed wireless charging. The iPhone X camera included the 7-megapixel TrueDepth front-facing camera and the dual 12-megapixel rear camera. All three phones came with the new Apple A11 bionic chip.

As the years progresses with Apple, the significant features were primarily having bigger and better displays, more advanced camera lenses, faster processors, new designs, and many more.
