Cyber Crime in the 21st Century

The rising rate of cybercrime has been increased very much in past 5 years. Cybercrime is a term that includes broad scope of criminal activities by means of computer. Cybercrime is referred to the act of

performing crime using cyberspace communication medium. Because of rapid globalization the consequences are that we have easy access to low cost mobile and internet facility. The crimes like cyber bulling and cyber defamation is rapidly increasing. The government are framing laws and policies to prevent these crimes. Most of the country are not fully equipped with legal department to prevent or handle these crimes.


Young youth and children among the most targeted section of society

are the ones who are affected by perilous effect of mobile and electronic

media. Cybercrime has two main broad categories Type 1 and Type 2.

Type 1 is single event from the perspective of the victim. on other hand

Type 2 refers to on going series of event and also including repeated

interaction with the target.

These activities include stock market manipulation, planning or carrying out terrorist activities, identity theft, credit card frauds, blackmailing etc.


Categories of Cybercrime: -

The cybercrime can be classified into following


1) Cybercrime against individuals – In these types of crime the individual persons are affected. The potential harm of such crime to humanity is severe and very dangerous to mental health. Few of the individual cybercrime are pornography (specially child), violation of privacy email spoofing, cyber stalking gambling, credit cards frauds etc.


2) Cybercrime against property - Second type of cybercrime is against the property. Intellectual property crimes, cyber vandalism, cyber trespassing, internet time thefts etc are some of the cybercrime against property.


3) Cybercrime against government/ organization/ society – Cyber terrorism is one of the distinct cybercrimes against government and related organization. The group and individual use cyberspace communication and electronic media to threatens the international government and the citizens of the country. This crime manifest itself into a terrorism when government or military websites are hacked and information is stolen. Cybercrime against organizations and society mainly includes password sniffing, malware attacks, web jacking etc.


4) Internet crime schemes – Today the current internet trends and schemes in the world can be classified under three classification mentioned in “categories of cybercrimes” section. Cyber criminals are the one who performs the cybercrime. Cyber criminals are classified into three subdivisions according to their motivation to perform the crime.


a) Type 1 cybercriminals – The individual or group who are hungry for the recognition and the people who have hacking as their hobby or politically motivated hacker are included in this type.

b) Type 2 cybercriminals - These include psychological pervert, financially motivated hacker or organized criminals. They are not hungry for recognition they just need money.

c) Type 3 cybercriminals – These includes the individual or group who disgruntled or former employees who are seeking for revenge and also looks for blackmailing.


The cybercriminals mentioned in “Internet crime schemes” section track information in many ways. In this section, the behaviour of the cybercriminals to perform cybercrimes is outlined. In common fraud scams the criminals gathers the information by phishing and spoofing leading to identity theft. The imposter pretends to be the other person and uses their information without their knowledge to commit theft or fraud. Crimes related to health care, insurances are also performed by hacking and forging identities.


Cyber harassment and defamation especially the cases of paedophiles and stalkers use false identities to trap the children and teenagers. Social media sites, chat rooms etc. are a major source for harassment and defamation.
