Covid-19 and AI's success rate in solving it

By Syed Wahib

The novel Covid-19 or commonly called coronavirus has caused a global panic among countries

especially in overall developed continents like North America, South America and Europe. The medical sectors in these nations are yet to solve the crisis and raise the validity and role played by AI in solving the crisis.

In the other medical fields, AI has been proven to be efficient and sufficient in helping medical patients. In these developed countries, there is no shortage of companies using this technology and smart learning to help diagnose the covid-19 at a faster rate. Airay, developed in the MENA region has seen success and several other intelligent software were built and modeled in different parts of the world have seen positive results. Data collection, model performance and a tendency of higher accuracy of detection has been instrumental in showing good results. The symptoms of losing the sense of color and taste was initially detected by AI software by studying the algorithms and the DNA of patients. With these findings one of China’s most prominent technology giant Alibaba announced an algorithm it says can diagnose cases within 20 seconds, with 96% accuracy.

However certain experts hold the opinion that AI systems are likely to have been trained on data about advanced infections, making them less effective at detecting early signs of the virus. For AI’s role to grow in the world, it would require an effort from the policymakers as well as ample amount of resources, time and most importantly funding. So its role can exponentially grow but due to the economic slump in almost all countries, implementation or growth of AI seems to far-off thing. It has also helped in the drug discovery research and with the help of the ‘network medicine’ ,several potential vaccines or medicines are being tested to solve the crisis.

Using network medicine, AI and a fusion of the two has led the consortium to identify 81 potential drugs that could help. It is equally helping radiologists in their detection of symptoms and in countries where there is a shortage of radiologist and radiological instruments, AI can be a life saver even if implemented at a small scale. However, AI alone cannot do this, it currently also requires an expertise in the field of studying patterns along with knowledge in any medical field or sector.

Currently, the effects of AI are only seen in the West or developed states. As time moves, more

information about the usefulness of AI in solving the covid-19 and its future in the medical world will be analyzed. If AI is utilized properly, it is a promising prospect in solving such future crisis and increasing research in medicinal solutions.
