Augmented Reality or an Alternate Realm?

Updated: Jun 8, 2020

By Rysha Sultania

It's been roughly 75 days of lockdown in India and humans, being the social butterflies that they

are, could not be unhappier. Shut away from restaurants, shopping malls and cinema halls, the

nostalgia of the good ol' days is playing on loop in many lonely minds. However, the Gen-Z of

today is much luckier than the denizens of the Plague Era. For we have Technology and its

myriad superpowers!

According to a survey from Grid Raster, 91% of tech enterprises are already using or are planning to adopt AR and VR technology.(1) The sheer possibility of imagination and achievement that VR can encompass is abominable! The technology can allow for truly immersive experiences in all fields of life, be it online shopping, interior designing and even outdoor adventure activities! Essentially anything that can be done outside can be done inside as long as one has enough space, the required materials and a will to step into a utopian universe!

The primary subject of virtual reality is simulating the vision. Every headset aims to perfect their

approach to creating an immersive 3D environment. Each VR headset puts up a screen in front of each eye thus, eliminating any interaction with the real world and a complete focus on the augmentation. To create authentic virtual reality experience there are certain prerequisites – a frame rate of minimum 60fps, an equally competent refresh rate and minimum 100-degree field of view. (2)

Today, these technologies are becoming readily available and affordable too, giving millions of people the access to greater connectivity which is in turn causing behavioral changes that will far outlast the current pandemic. Even after life goes relatively back to normal, several surveys show that  people will remain socially distant, but using technologies and extended reality they will be virtually much closer. These platforms and technologies will allow businesses to run and grow irrespective of the challenges posed by social distancing.(3)

AR/VR/MR are examples of a beautiful amalgamation of art, design and science. It takes an expansive team of IT professionals, graphic designers, animators, game developers among others, to create even a few frames worth of content!

Now, one can visualize how a cupboard will look on their wall from sitting right in front of it or experience skydiving without actually diving! With the growing use of online platforms, one has become privy to feeling the huge need for a way to engage in online webinars and conferences without repenting the insurmountable void that is caused by the lack of actual human contact. Through this recent E- breakthrough, we can see our loved ones in front of us as if they never left!

I would like to remind you that in the modern ages we are blessed to live in, the kind of progress in the Virtual and Augmented Reality industry is not just talk of the future. What was once seen only in sci-fi movies exists currently and is only getting better! Popular video games and immersive apps are spreading their consumer market via these resources like never before. Hop onto the VR bandwagon before it's out of reach, literally!
