Literature and technology, two walks of life that are not parallel, but connected together like
all else in our web of life.
As William Shakespeare said, "Literature is a comprehensive essence of the intellectuallife
of a nation." Literature holds a mirror to life. Society, men, manners and contemporary
influences have shaped literary works. Any literary text is, therefore, a product of its time.
Modern life is marked by relentless advancements in the field of technology. Technology
dominates every aspect of our being. Nowadays, in the words of Laurie Anderson,
"Technology is the campfire around which we tell our stories." Gadgets galore, inventions
plenty, All together constitute our world, the world of today.
It is no surprise therefore, that the literature of our times would be an expression of that
same technology. Literature is both realistic and fantastic. Modern literature is an expression
of the realities of life, caught in the throes of technology. At the same time literature uses
technology to weave tales of human fantasy like cyborg literature or science fiction. The rise
of graphic novels can be traced to the modern temper of breaking away from traditions and
experimenting with new ideas and forms. Similarly the use of social networking platforms as
literary receptors and literary spaces are new phenomena! The digitisation of libraries and
development of e-books and journals are yet another of the many ways in which technology
and literature have joined hands.
These two brilliant minds, technology and literature have come together to weave a world
more astounding than ever before. Let us join hands with them and move forward, our eyes
glowing with awe. Awe as the images of a great tomorrow glow before our eyes.
