As the world grows to embrace technology into its many sectors of life, artificial intelligence has found its way into the education sector. Artificial Intelligence is growing rapidly in this sector and it is hard to not think about aspects or potential effects of these advancements. Will teachers eventually be replaced with robots? Could school run without any humans? Is artificial intelligence really benefiting the education system?
Artificial intelligence has already been applied to classrooms in various ways. Such as the following:
1. Grading - Teachers do not always have to manually grade papers or tests now. There are many resources that
allow for electronic grading through the simple filling of bubbles on paper that go through and analyzed
by machines. Now grading portals are also making a teacher’s job easier. Grading portals calculate the
grade of the paper or test if a teacher just puts the correct number of questions out of all the questions.
These innovations are allowing for teachers to spend more time with their students.
2. Virtual Learning - Teachers can have platforms where students hand in their work. This came very handy in the situation
surrounding COVID-19. Students were able to keep working and learning at home through applications like Schoology that has conference features that are like Facetime as well as folders to hand out work. In times without a pandemic, these portals could be used when a student is sick and needs to catch up with work.
3. Technology- Students are now exposed to whiteboards that can show images and videos. Instead of a teacher writing on a smartboard, they can show word documents or videos to better explain courses. This can be extremely beneficial as all students learn differently. Students can now learn through all types of lessons. Many schools now have iPads and laptops that students can use to enhance their learning.
4. Presentations/Lessons- Have your teachers ever presented a PowerPoint or Sway as a lesson in your classroom? This is artificial learning! Teachers are using applications like this to enhance their lesson and make it more engaging.
This can make students more interested in the class.
Artificial intelligence is all around the classroom, but it is at its beginning stages. There are many other ways that artificial intelligence can be applied to the classroom. We just have to wait for the future!
