AI and Viability of the Environment

With the emergence of contemporary modern technology, the new phenomenon of Artificial Intelligence has been applauded for its drastic change and capability in the field of technology. However, one of main critiques of this new technology and the important question that has been raised is the sustainability of it and its related factors.

AI has helped several industries in reducing their time rush and in the analysis of several fine points of multi-industrial projects. Taking the example of its implementation in the agricultural sector specifically with FarmGrow, a social undertaking by the Grameen foundation, which has achieved excellent results in growing and optimizing yields, is a great way of showing its excellence. Another example is its growing role in the medical sector, where doctors can perform operations in real time with the help of drones and AI. It compensates for the lack of

human experts in several areas and its proper implementation in several LDC can be priceless in those nation’s growth. It has several positive impacts on the climate and the environment.

However, the lack of proper sustainability, maintenance and lack of proper planning can lead to several to several disastrous consequences in societal and monetary aspects. The energy used in sustaining AI is four times that of the normative technology. Taking the example of the upcoming 5G where AI plays a vast role in its making, 5G seems to be unsustainable because of its energy consumption and the automatic rise of electric costs which undermines the middle and small scale industries and their growth. Another critical point raised with the London Uber

controversy was the validity of the algorithms set by the AI technology. It failed to give correct algorithms and resulted in surge pricing during the London terror attacks.

One of the main arguments against its proposed sustainability is the AI technology getting ‘too smart’ so as to replace mankind in the future and raising the question of war between machines and humans. In its entirety, AI has several environmental benefits and its growth shows the same. But at the same time its apparent ethical and proper use has come to light. Only time will tell whether it will benefit mankind entirely or not.
